Sejny

Sejny - Yeshiva
XIX c.
The building of the former Yeshiva stands in the immediate vicinity of the White Synagogue. Yeshiva was probably founded in 1846. Its creator was a well-known organizer and religious philosopher Mojżesz Icchak Avigdor. It enjoyed recognition among the followers of the Jewish Enlightenment and briefly became the center of the Haskalah (Enlightenment) for the whole of Lithuania. It was here that conferences of the most prominent rabbis were held. The Jewish Talmudic school existed until 1939. After the war, the building housed a slippers factory. In October 1990, the Center "Borderland - arts, cultures, nations", pursuant to the decision of the City Council in Sejny, received some of the rooms of the former yeshiva to use. It was the first seat of the Center and the Foundation, today it is the Sejneńska Jazz Cooperative and the music studio Pogranicza. (and.)
