He was born in a Jewish family; a son of Mieczysław, the Okopowa Street Jewish cemetery gradener, and Justyna from Ostlaum family. His brother Jakub was an internist and a diabetes specialist. Since 15th January 1915 he was married to a painter and a stage designer Zofia Węgierkowa, Billauer nee (1893-1975), sister of an actor and director  Karol Billauer.

For local Białystok political party of PiS councillors our theatre is unworthy to be named after him.
