"There was merely one thousand out of 42,000 left after the war. The vast majority was gassed in Treblinka when the local ghetto had been shut down. After the war Bialystok was inhabited mostly by people arriving from nearby villages and borderland areas. Nowadays, this city operates perfectly right beside its history and proper identity. There are few people who admit their nationality and religion. There are few history lovers. City authorities organize events to commemorate such anniversaries like Ghetto Uprising or Burning of Great Synagogue. But even on such ocassions Bialystok lives on its own, separated form its history with a glass wall, as if the memory of this place has been sterillized during that population exchange."
