Painted matzevah in Białystok
Until 1939, Jewish tombstones, or matzevot, were painted. There are many reasons for reaching for paint and brush, one of which was simple pragmatism: polychrome matzevot were cheaper than expensive decorative work. It was also relatively cheap to renovate a tombstone. It was enough to repaint the name of the deceased. Stone and concrete matzevot were painted, as well as cast iron and wooden ones. I will talk about colorful matzevot on October 14 (Friday), at the Slendzinski Gallery, 24A Waryńskiego St., at 6 pm.
