Grabówka is considered to be a place of the biggest Nazi crime in the Podlasie region. SS police and army executed circa 16,000 people there, not only Poles, but also Belorussians, people of Jewish origin and Soviet POWs. In the spring of 1944, the Germans tried to erase all evidence of this crime, but because of the attack of the Soviet army, they could not finish it. Nevertheless, a special commando exhumed and burned the corpses from three mass graves.
