Ostatnie spotkanie - The last meeting

The last meeting

"I can still see it today - a small, barred window of a freight wagon and Haszka, a Jewish friend from Kuźnica, looking at us from inside," Irena Solska (Dekar) recalls. "Afterwards, I found out from my dad that the transport went to Treblinka. Earlier, I was  living in Kuźnica, but my dad was scared that they would come and take me away to work in Germany, so he got me a job in Białystok, on the railway. The work was hard, my job was to hammer stones underneath the rails. Working close to the tunnel, where the tracks led to Warsaw, I saw freight wagons slowly moving forward. They stopped and I suddenly heard a loud shout coming from one of them: Irka! Irka! I looked around, and saw a face of a woman, a white scarf on her head - it was Haszka, she was begging for water. Inside I saw Leib as well. I was close to a place where I could get a cup of water. On my way back to the wagon, I suddenly heard: Halt! A German soldier with a rifle said that there were "Juden" and told me to leave. All Poles working there were ordered to leave the area. It was a warm spring of 1943."
