Summer of 1941 - a memory
ghetto

In the summer of 1941, the Germans ordered several landlords from Radule, Rzędziany and Babin (among others), to come to Białystok early in the morning with their wagons. Matylda Kurowska was 14 years old at the time, and she was living in Radule. Her father was one of the landlords appointed to transport Jewish families and their possessions to the ghetto that was being formed.

She was there with her father several times, watching the horses. She remembers that they approached a house, for example on Lipowa Street. A Jewish family packed their possessions, and Mrs. Kurowska's father took them near Częstochowska and Żabia Street. She remembered one particular house on Artyleryjska Street, with a mill standing next to it. A Jewish woman, around 60, was living there, and she wondered why they are taking all of them and putting them in one place. She was very polite. In that house, they packed furniture, clothes, bedding, and a very tall mirror, very carefully packaged so that it would not break. For this service, Jewish families paid with suit fabrics, pieces of clothing, furniture. The only remnant that was left after them was a small jug with a metal lid, which unfortunately broke.
