Born in Wołkowysk. In 1912, in Białystok, together with Osip Perelstein he founded Habima Hebrew Theatre, which later became The National Theatre of Israel. In 1937, he founded the Bet-Am Theatre in Palestine (Tel Aviv). Later, he moved to the United States, where he became the director of the Jewish Theater, associated with the Federal Theater Project.
