Efraim (Efroim) and Menasze came from a poor Jewish family from Warsaw. They received their first painting lessons from their older brother, Józef. They started studying at the Municipal School of Decorative Art and Painting (Miejska Szkoła Sztuk Zdobniczych i Malarstwa) in 1921, under the direction of Miłosz Kotarbiński. Since 1923 (Menasze) and 1924 (Efraim), they both continued their studies at Warsaw School of Fine Arts, in the workshops of Władysław Skoczylas and Tadeusz Pruszkowski: as the anecdote says, only one of them paid the tuition, and they took turns going to classes. In 1933, they started exhibiting the paintings they created together, signed only with their last name; as a result, it became very difficult to distinguish between their own works of art. Often, they worked in Kazimierz. In 1939, they came to Białystok with a wave of refugees fleeing from Warsaw. They participated in the artistic life of the city under the Soviet occupation. After the liquidation of the Białystok's ghetto, they were taken to Nazi concentration camps, first to Stutthof, then Flossenburg. They both died on the eve of the end of the war.
