SUKKOT - ŚWIĘTO NAMIOTÓW

Sukkot,Feast of Tabernacles (Tents), also called Kuczki- begins five days after JomKippur fest, two weeks after the beginning of the year.

Itcommemorates living in tabernacles and tents ( sukkah, hut, kuczka) during theescape of Jews from Egypt and wandering to the Promised Land.

In ancienttimes the fest was connected with harvest. For seven days of the vestorthodoxical Jews live outside the houses in tabernacles under the sky, oftenbuilt e.g. on balconies. During the fest they recite psalms and perform theceremony of rocking with bouquets woven of palm branches (lulaw), threebranches of myrtle (hadasa), two branches of willow (arawa) held in the righthand and fruits of the etrog (cytron) in the left. The rocking is done to fourcorners of the world and up and down as a sign of honour for the Creator ofthese gifts.

Sukkotlasts seven days and is closed on the eighth day of the fest the so-calledSimchat Torah ("Joy of the Torah"), in which the Torah scrolls areraised seven times around the temple in a joyful procession.
