MURAL - MARK PODWAL
Kategoria: NOWY JORK USA Dąbrowa Białostocka
In memory of the Jews who for centuries lived
in Dąbrowa Białostocka, I have painted an impression of an oak tree (Dąbrowa means “oak
forest”) with the twenty-two letters of the Yiddish alphabet scattered among the leaves. On the
horizon are the Dąbrowa synagogue and homes painted red and orange to symbolize the burning of the
town by the Germans in 1941.
To honor my mother’s birthplace, I am
donating the image to the town of Dąbrowa Białostocka to be copied on a school outside wall as a
painted mural. Moreover, I am granting the image’s reproduction rights to Dąbrowa
Białostocka.
My artistic imaginings of my
Polish roots commemorates a vanished world of Jewish shtetl life in pre-World War II Poland – a
world that has greatly influenced my art, which has exhibited and published
worldwide.
The image would not
have been created without the inspiring efforts of Dorota
Budzińska and the dedication of Forum for Dialogue to
raise awareness of Poland’s Jewish heritage.
