Grajewo - Wiernik Hersz
Dostawca dla wojska [1934]

Kalendarz jubileuszowy : pamiątka XV-lecia odzyskania Niepodległości, 1934. (GK)

Hersz Wiernik was my great-grandmother`s sister`s husband. The son of Wiernik was the sole survivor of their family. He was sent to Bergen-Belsen and Auschwitz; he was the one who told my family after the war how the rest of the family were killed on Dolna Street, Grajewo.

Hersz -Tzvi Wiernik Trestenowicz (1891) and Chaya Alte Gringras Kulwicz were residents of the town of Grajewo. In 1942, Felix or Fajwel (1922-2010) their son, riding a bicycle around the town, saw his relatives lined up outside the house. His brother Gerszon (1918) gave him a sign to stay away. He moved back, ran and heard shots from far.
Later, Felix was seized by the Nazis. He was in Bergen-Belsen and Auschwitz. In Auschwitz he saw his brother, Gerszon 2 times and then he didn`t see him anymore.

Felix, the only survivor of his family, meets his wife in a camp for displaced persons. He knew that he had uncles in Costa Rica, who managed to get out Poland before the war: Chana Gringras who married Abram Lejba Wajner from Grajewo, Sonia Gringras who married Abram Sztern from Szczuczyn and his uncle Jaime Gringras. Felix married Miriam Wainssucher, and he contacted Jaime Gringras and he helped them get to Costa Rica.

Felix later told Abram Wajner what happened to his parents. Feliks saw the parents and sisters of Abram Wajner also inline outside of their house back in Grajewo. He saw Jowel Hersz Wajner (1868), his wife Fejga Bejla Sztejnberg (1971) and daughters. The Nazis forced Jowel and a daughter to dig a hole and before killing them Jowel said the prayer Kaddish. Once he finished praying they killed them all.

Its from "Death books" from Auschwitz. Killed on February 22nd, 1943.

Ariel Vainer who sent us this interesting story lives in Costa Rica. His family was able to escape Grajewo in 1933 to Costa Rica.
