It was designated by the United Nations General Assembly resolution on 1 November 2005 to commemorate the tragedy of the Holocaust that occurred during the Second World War by the Nazi regime. By this designation the General Assembly agreed to acknowledge Holocaust as the historical event. It is observed every 27 January - the date of the largest Nazi concentration and death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau  liberation by the Red Army in 1945.
